Morgantown is located in the county of Madison, in the central region of West Virginia. It is bordered by Jackson and Kanawha counties to the northwest, Brooke County to the northeast, and Monongalia County to the southeast. The population was 16,358 at the 2000 census. The first permanent white settlement in Morgantown was founded in 1780 by Captain James Cook as a trading post on what is now Wirtz Avenue. The town began as a small community of around 100 residents and grew rapidly due to its location and access to transportation routes. By 1825, Morgantown had developed into a major commercial center with several stores, mills, and churches. In 1868, Morgantown became an independent city under the leadership of Mayor John Hottenbeck. In 1917 Governor Colonel James Fenton designated Morgantown as the site for West Virginia's new capital city. On November 3 of that year, Morgantown became West Virginia's official capital after becoming one of four states (along with Colorado Springs, New Mexico City and Wichita Falls) that were admitted to the Union on January 20th of that year. The original brick building which stands today on Main Street served as Morgantowen's central government until 1978 when it was replaced by a new building designed by renowned architect Edward Burnham Jr. Morgantown has experienced many changes over its history including steady growth during World War II; difficult times during the Great Recession; and rapid growth followingthe passage of The Appalachian Regional Commission Act in 1965 which created numerous jobs throughout central Appalachia
