Morgantown is a town in Jackson County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,567 at the 2010 census. Morgantown is part of the Wheeling–Ft. Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area. Morgantown was founded in 1813 as a small community on the east bank of the Monongahela River by Royal Doctor Boone and others who built Fort Boonesborough to watch over it from upstream. In 1834, when the U.S. Cavalry arrived in what is now Morgantown to suppress Native American raiding parties, Major General James Fenton moved his army into town and established it as an American military base for operations against Indian tribes throughout the region. For many years after its founding, Morgantown functioned as a one-horse town with virtually no economic development because of its remote location and lack of infrastructure necessary for success in an era when transportation was mainly horse-drawn wagons and carts. However, during World War II Morgantown became one of the most important rail hubs in America due to its strategic location between Pittsburgh and Boston on two main lines running north-south In 1951, efforts were made to develop Morgantown into a larger city by developing land beyond its original boundaries; however these proposals were never fully realized and only generated mild interest among local developers until later years when new initiatives began to surface such as zoning changes that would have allowed for more commercial development within downtown Morgantowen while still preserving much of its historic character
