It lies on the Monongahela River and is bordered by Armstrong County to the east, by Preston County to the west, and by McDowell County to the north. Morgantown was founded in 1827 as a small community on what is now Monongalia Street. In 1857, it became Morgantown Township and then Morgantown Borough in 1911. As of 2010, MorgantOWN had a population of 5,812 people living within its borders! The history of this small town goes back many years and there are many stories that can be told about it! The first residents of Morganton were primarily British colonists who arrived in 1780 from Edinburghshire, Scotland. They built homes near what is now downtown Morganton until about 1800 when they moved out for fear of Indians who were hostile toward them. From 1827 until 1830 there were only two stores open in Morganton- one operated by John Fenton and one operated by James Patton- both closed due to lack of business. However during this time period there was also construction activity taking place on what is now Bennett Avenue which led to increased business for both stores combined! In 1861 when Ohio passed a bill authorizing gold mining operations within state boundaries, settlers from surrounding counties started arriving in droves to set up shop around what would become known as “Morganton Gold Rush”. By 1865 over 1,000 people had gathered at what would later become known as “Morganton Depot” which served as an encampment for miners waiting their turn for transportation upriver to claim their share of the treasure seekers’ spoils! In 1870s an ordinance was passed forbidding women from working outside their home without a man present so much so that one woman even took her husband with her into work sites! This ordinance effectively ended all female labor inside Morganton proper however throughout those years many local women did do some form “women’s work” such as cleaning houses or picking apples while their husbands labored away down below! In 1875 when coalmining began developing at nearby Roanoke Rapids (later part of Huntington) several families relocated permanently to start anew life within central Logan County while others continued living elsewhere temporarily before settling permanently here in 1876 thanks largely to President Ulysses S Grant’s Executive Order 9472 which called for new white settlements across western Virginia subject onlyto regulation provided they met certain criteria including having property worth $200 per acre (!), being Protestant2 (and not Catholic like many other areas at that time), having Female owners/occupiers3 ( virtually all men owning land prior to 1880), fencing off lots with stockades4 etc., etcetera!!5 . Of course following his inauguration President James Buchanan issued an executive order ordering all white settlement pending approval from Indian commissioners6 !! Consequently not surprisingly most early Morgantoans were Irish Catholics7 . Over time various restrictions added unto these initial successful endeavors such as prohibition against blacksmithing/smelting(1887), closing mills during daylight hoursBeginning on November 11th 1907 all groceries must be sold BY THE BOX!!!8 ,9 Restrictions placed upon nonresidential use ot land prevailing during military occupation10 etc….. but overall things pretty much went along relatively smooth until WWII!!11 Buchanan ordered county officialsnot allow any more blacksmithing nor smelting going on within county limits!!!!! Just imagine if he had known then how things would have gone differently…. After World War II ended people slowly started moving back into town again but because of numerous regulations still remain today governing most aspects OF MORGANTOWN LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
