On July 20, 1785, General George Washington issued Order No. 7 which directed that all arms be taken up within 24 hours or else martial law would be declared throughout the colony The first school in Morgantwood was organized on March 3, 1800 by Reverend Ebenezer Dickinson and Mrs Elizabeth Dickinson under instruction from Dr John Marshall who taught English language classes at Mount Zion Church across High Street from where Morgantonians gathered for worship every Sunday evening since 1700 AGO After some debate about whether or not to name their new town after either General Washington or Benjamin Harrison due to their overlapping careers as Commander-in-Chief during the American Revolution (1776-1801), members of a committee appointed by Governor Thomas Jefferson decided that it should be called "Morganton" after General Edward Morgan who had commanded British forces during Queen Anne's War (1747-1751). The original plat map shown above shows only one street leading out into what is now known as downtown Morganton which included only four homes including Mr John Dickinson's house which still stands today On October 20th 1809, Andrew Jackson signed Executive Order 9271 giving MORGANTOWN free access to public education while also authorizing appropriations for improvements such as roads and bridges necessary for development In order to comply with this order local citizens began erecting stone buildings on what is now Main Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue between 1828 & 1830 . These structures served as schools until 1912 when a new brick school building was erected on Broad Street near College Square . This structure served grades K thru 12 until it burned down in 1957 following an electrical fire . In 1907 Morgentwood established its own bank which continues operations currently using Building #2 next door . After years of discussion but no action by elected officials an Act To Establish An Agricultural School For Boys And Girls Was Passed In 1912 By The Board Of Education Following World War Imorgantineans rebuilt their small community around Warm Springs Road just outside of town limits becoming known as "Warm Springs" because they could no longer rely upon Warm Springs Road being accessible year round so they built a larger concrete post office building designed by Carruths & Hitchcock that still stands today inside downtown Morganton
