In the 1830s, local gunsmiths began creating firearms for the military. By 1840, guns had started being manufactured in Morgantown and throughout the surrounding area. In 1851, a company was formed to produce rifles for militia duty. The company soon became known as Winchester Firearms Company. The Winchester rifle was used by both American and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. After the war, production of firearms ceased in Morgantown but continued at Winchester until 1902. During this time, Morgantown became home to one of the largest armsories in central Appalachia. Rifle parts from this period can be found today at several antique stores in town

Morgantown is a census-designated place in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,563 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County. Morgantown is located on the Allegheny River and includes 1,752 acres (631 ha) of forested land. The community was founded by James Hance in 1811 as a trading post on Big Meadows Creek near what is now Morgantown. In 1827, Hance built Fort Mahoning on Mount Carmel to protect his Post Road Trading Center from Indian attack. The fort served as a military base until 1829 when it was burned down by Native Americans during their Raid on the area known then as White Sulphur Springs Township. Morgantown's first settler were John Weldon and his family who arrived in Morgan County in 1785 and started an agricultural farm around present day Weldon Hill which they named "Hancock". later that year Weldon married Mary Fenton from Hancock and together they took up farming in what is now Morgantown. By 1800, Morgantonians had laid out streets and erected homes with logs gathered from nearby woods. In 1811 James Hance established Post Road Trading Center about due east of present day Morganton just south of present day Harper Woods off State Route 21A (now US 21). A few years later he built Fort Mahoning for defense against Indians but this also failed to stop them from raiding white settlements in Morgan County so he decided to build a more fortified post further upriver at White Sulphur Springs Township which he named "Morganton" after his home town back home in England where he had been born two years earlier. When Black Hawk War erupted between Ulysses S Grant’s army and General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Confederate forces early autumn 1861 many people fled or were driven into hiding throughout Appalachia including many residents of Morgan County including James Hance who with hisproperty holdings upstream along the Allegheny River sought safety downstream along Beaver Creek among other places until finally settling permanently atpresent day Morganton just south of Harper Woods off State Route 21A (now US 21). He became one of only a few local farmers to remain through both wars despite being heavily taxed by Union government while most locals either fled or surrendered to Confederate forces leaving their property undefended . After Black Hawk War ended Grant ordered all federal properties returned unoccupied except for those under military jurisdiction meaning that much prewarMorgan County land passed into Confederate hands such as what is now downtown Morganton including most of Lowertown where Hance lived before eventually moving away during Reconstruction when Union troops moved into the area . Later over time some portions within Downtown Morganton such as Uppertown eastward past Main Street until reaching intersection with Market Street were annexed by neighboring boroughs while other parts like Lowertown remained undeveloped until recently when development began anew adjacent to uppertown eastward past Main Street according to plans submitted for zoning approval back in 2017 This latest project would result in demolition/land reclamation of older sections within Lowertown northeastward past Market Street currently occupied by an old grocery store/cocktail lounge etc., construction of new housing units associated with this project consisting mostly single family dwellings designed circa 1935-1940 style overlooking lowertown park opposite historic courthouse prioritizing open space rather than buildings used for retail purposes

The town straddles the Beaver River and its confluence with the Ohio River forms part of Appalachia's eastern border. To its northeast lies Mingo Valley and to its west are Ridgefield Township and Elkton Township. The first European settlers in what is now Morgantown were French traders who arrived in 1755 as part of an effort to open up present-day West Virginia. By 1762, Englishman George Washington had erected a fur trading post at Greenbrier Hill on the Ohio River which served as a staging area for American Revolutionary War expeditions against Native Americans such as the Shawnees and Cherokees. In 1819, during the Creek Indian Wars, general John Custer led his cavalry units into battle against Creeks near what is now Morgantown. After losing most of his unit but capturing over 100 scalps, Custer established himself as one of America’s greatest commanders and won national recognition for his exploits during that time period. On December 25, 1821, Morgantown was founded when General John Forbes “Pete” Morgan donated land to be used for county purposes on which it still sits today (the current courthouse building dates back to 1907). In 1830,Morgan set about constructing a sawmill on Beaver Dam creek which became one of Morgantownd's largest businesses until it closed operations in 1965; however local industry has continued to play an important role throughout recent history with several small companies manufacturing products such as textiles, metalsmithing and agricultural equipment in Morgantown proper since before World War II
