Morgantown, West Virginia is a small town located in Mingo County, West Virginia. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County. Morgantown is part of the Wheeling-based Capital District. Morgantown was first settled by Scots-Irish refugees who arrived in 1812. The community name derived from a local tree called "Morgantown" which stood on the original site of Morgantown today. In 1826, General Zebulon Pike dedicated a Presbyterian church and school to serve the new settlers in what would become Morgantown. The townspeople named their first post office after General Pike - Morganton Vogt Post Office #1 was established on July 1st, 1827. In 1839, John Capps donated land to build a courthouse and jail in what would become Morgantown. The court house and jail were completed in 1840 and served as the town's main source of law enforcement until it closed its doors for good in 1865 due to budget cuts by then Governor Andrew Johnson. The old courthouse still stands today as an historical landmark within walking distance of most of Morganton's businesses and residences including Hagerstown Library & Museum, Stroudsburg Library System #2 (now known as US 21), National WWII Memorial Museum & Park (formerly known as Veterans Memorial Park), and Mountaineer Lodge #5D&E Campgrounds Resort Hotel www.campingmorgantonwestvirginia6011wwwyahoocom/. During World War II, many MorgontOWN residents helped contribute to American war effort through work at various factories or military bases located throughout the area such as DuPont munitions plants #3B & 3C outside Winchester; GE Aircraft Industries plant #8A north near Clarksburg; Chrysler Corporation plant number 5G northwest near Harrisonburg; Army Ammunition Plant plant number 7A northeast near Weirton; United States Naval Air Station Pensacola east of Huntington Beach In addition many citizens also mobilized to help fight in Europe such as Mrs., First Lt., Mr., Sgt., Pvt., NCOs all from Morgantywn High School where they practiced their skills during Victory Over Germany program which took place between Apr 1942-May 1945 inclusive

Morgantown is located in the eastern part of West Virginia, on the Monongahela River. It was founded in 1792 by James K. Polk and his father, William Polk, as a trading post on the site of present-day Morgantown. The first European to visit Morgantown was Pierre Charles L'Enfant, who inspected it in 1801 while surveying the area for a new U.S. capital. In 1819, Morgantown became an independent city and was renamed after George Washington as planned by then-Mayor John Findlay. The city's first mayor, Wm. Hays Tippecanoe, served from 1828 to 1830; he is also generally considered to be the founder of MORGANTOWN University (now West Virginia University). In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell captured Morganton during the Battle of Gettysburg and burned it tothe ground; this event is commonly cited as the start of Morgantown's decline as a commercial center. However, since then Morgantowndom has seen several resurgence periods including one during the 1990s when its economy grew rapidly due to increased tourism; however recent economic downturns have led to some loss of jobs and declining home values In 1998, Morgrantiwood won $4 million from Gulfstream Ventures in a business challenge sponsored by Coca Cola
