The Morgantown Rifle Club was founded in 1881. The club was renamed the West Virginia Rifle Association in 1902. In 1934, the WVA merged with the National Rifle Association to become one of the first state rifle associations in the United States. The WVA continued to be an active member organization until 1959 when it merged with the State Rifle and Pistol Club of West Virginia to form the present-day Morgantown Rifle and Pistol Club.

Morgantown was founded in 1829 as a small station on the Kanawha River by General George Armstrong Custer and his cavalry unit while they were campaigning against Native Americans. The first post office was established in Morgantown in 1830. In 1851, the town became an incorporated village when it merged with nearby Parkersburg to form the new county of Sullivan. The growth of Morgantown accelerated following World War II when hundreds of workers from Pittsburgh and other areas moved to Appalachia to build roads, factories and military installations. After the war ended, construction slowed as many people left for various reasons including political unrest in the postwar period and skill shortages caused by technology advances such as television production plants and jet planes. In 2000, Morgantown experienced its most significant growth since its incorporation when it became one of five cities chosen by Appalachian Development LLC to serve as host cities for Techstars Europe conference which attracted more than 400 entrepreneurs from across Europe and North America In recent years there has been a trend towards downtown redevelopment which began with the development of The M&T Center off Main Street in 2006 followed by similar projects around town including Peoples Bank Arena (2009), Wirtz Municipal Complex (2010) and finally The Torch building located just east of downtown which will house offices for both private businesses as well as government entities such as West Virginia University MorgantOWN's rich history comes alive during special events like Appalachian Heritage Days or John F Kennedy Presidential Library week where events take place throughout downtown called "John F K." Huckabee had strong Second Amendment rights stances and worn several NRA clothing items during his time in office including an NRA T-shirt that read “I am not going out without my AR15!” His support for gun rights was well known within Arkansas political circles and he helped make GUNS don’t kill people one of the top talking points against him during his campaign against then Lieutenant Governor John Bel Edwards Jr.. In 2007, Huckabee announced he would not run for reelection due to health concerns; however, he continued to wear NRA clothing into his final days in office before dying at 75 years old on November 5th due complications from Parkinson’s disease).
