In 1855, Captain George Armstrong sent a team of men to explore the area around Morgantown. They found that there was much potential for growth in this region, and soon began exploring new ground. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee decided to move his army from Petersburg to West Virginia as part of the Confederate war effort. As a result, many businesses in Morgantown were closed down and people had to go back to farming. It was not until the late 1800s that industries began to thrive in Morgantown again. The first auto dealership opened up in 1900 and by 1930, Morgantown had become one of the most important cities in West Virginia because of its proximity to Pittsburgh and other major metropolitan areas.
