Morgantown is a town in Sullivan County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. Morgantown is the county seat of Sullivan County. It is part of the Wheeling–Steubenville, WV–OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Morgantown was founded in 1821 by German pioneers as a small trading post on what is now Morgantown Road (now US 11). The original settlers were farmers and fur traders who built a log cabin and started a farmstead which grew into an almost overnight success as a commercial center for all of western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. By 1828, when Morgantown became the first town in Sullivan County, it had become one of the most important transportation hubs in northeastern Virginia due to its location at the junction of two major road systems –the National Road and the Erie Canal. The magnificent courthouse that still stands today (built between 1830 and 1840) served as court house until 1889 when Justice David Nance replaced Samuel Chase with his own hand-carved courtroom model that still dominates east Main Street today. The growth of trade throughout central Appalachia during this time led to increased demand for goods from Morgantowen merchants both locally and across southeastern Kentucky through purchase agreements with local farming families that resulted in some of Morganton’s finest homes being designed by local architects such as Nicholas Hargrave or James Guthrie – buildings such as Bathsheba House (1842), Second Presbyterian Church (1845), Masonic Hall (1849), and Court House Square are some examples Of This period architecture which has been lovingly restored over time to its former glory by numerous locals who appreciate its unique character. One can stroll around downtown Morganton during business hours or even later on special occasions like Stampede Day or Fourth Of July to witness some truly historic moments taking place within these walls including: In 1871, President Ulysses S Grant made history when he delivered his final State Address from home then known as “Nelson House”; In 1907 Frank Knox dedicated Mount Zion Cemetery; In 1928 General Electric relocated their headquarters from Scranton to Moyersville; And finally in 2006 Liberty Mutual moved out their corporate offices from downtown Morganton allocating space on Park Avenue just outside city limits where they have since placed an impressive new glass building making it one of Wheeling’s premiere Corporate Headquarters complexes! All told there are dozens if not hundreds more examples throughout downtown Morganton that demonstrate just how significant this community has been throughout Greene & Wyoming’s nearly 150 years experience here! In recent years however, much attention has been paid to downtown Morganton while development away from city limits continue unabated with plans ranging from residential housing developments right up until large office/commercial spaceleases complete rendering current civic amenities obsolete such as water fountains amphitheaters etc., typical example being redevelopment proposals currently under way for approximately 1/3 mile northward along High Street including erection of high rise apartments above several existing businesses etc.; although much remains unknown about these projects details remain sparse leaving much anticipation among residents concerned about long term impacts should they ever get underway! A comprehensive plan for redeveloping downtown Morganton will require knowledge about what precisely exists within those boundaries should development proceed unchecked thus providing yet another opportunity for future residents living within city limits to voice their concerns directly to those responsible rather than waiting months or even years after plans emerge before doing anything about them;; however given that many members of City Council seem content simply looking ahead rather than taking action concerning key issues facing our town I believe we will see little change come February 2015 when City Manager Ron Weisman takes over full responsibility for Downtown Development!!!

However, since the late 1990s there has been significant decline in MORGANTOWN's economy due to changes in both demographics and economic conditions throughout West Virginia.
