They were led by General John Forbes who built a fort on what is now Mount Carmel Boulevard. In 1828-29, Morgantowen was platted as a town and named for Samuel Acheson Morgan (1764-1837), Secretary of State under Andrew Jackson and one of the organizers of Ohio's statehood movement. In 1861 when West Virginia seceded from Confederate America, much of Morgantown was burned down as part of Union military operations throughout western Virginia; however many buildings still remain including both courthouse and jail which are now used as museum specimens. Morgantown experienced several economic setbacks during World War II but has since recovered with businesses like Apple Inc., Ford Motor Company and Wacoal Corporation locating there after recovering from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. There are also plans underway for development around downtown Morganton which so far has stalled due to high construction costs caused by its unique location on two navigable rivers within easy walking distance of each other without any cars or parking garages available nearby

However, recent efforts have begun to address these concerns through programs such as empowerment initiatives aimed at minority groups such as African Americans and Hispanics. Today, Morgantown is an important cultural center for central Appalachia with its own unique history and culture. It remains an economically vibrant community with strong ties to its rural heritage while also becoming increasingly accessible thanks to advances in transportation and communication technology
