In 1827, a group of Englishmen under Captain Adam Blackburn arrived and founded Fort Benjamin Harrison on the edge of present-day Martinsburg. This short-lived fort served as a staging ground for Indian attacks on British settlements in West Virginia during the late 1820s and early 1830s. In 1861, when Charleston was sacked by Confederate forces during the American Civil War, much of what is now Martinsburg was destroyed by fire; only Fort Benning remained standing until 1865 when it too surrendered to Union forces. After the war ended, General Robert Ewell decided to abandon Charleston and build his new army camp near present-dayMartinsburg within walking distance of alluvial gold fields he had discovered along east Carbon River Valley. The camp became known as "Ewell's Hill". The early residents here developed into one of Morgansbergs most successful agricultural communities with prosperous small businesses that continued until well into World War II when production shifted to larger cities worldwide due to increased wartime production requirements in America alone. Today descendants of those original pioneers still live hereabouts and continue their farming traditions while also enjoying modern amenities such as broadband internet access and home security systems which have made them more secure than ever before against crime or theft; these days they are also some of Morgansbergs most active civic participants involved with local government including serving on both local school boards and county commissions as well as being an active member or chairperson for several organizations including its own chapter of The United Methodist Church (UMC).
