Today, Martinsburg is home to a variety of businesses including two hospitals (Snyder Medical Center and Battle Creek Children’s Hospital), several universities (including Eastern Kentucky University, Southern Allegheny College, and Northern West Virginia University), as well as a number of restaurants and bars popular with local residents and visitors alike. The community also features a playground (the only one within walking distance), tennis courts, basketball courts/areas, soccer fields/pitches, a golf course/, plus numerous parks perfect for activities such as biking or swimming!

Today, Martin County is one of Appalachia’s most diverse communities with a wide range of cultures represented including German-American, Appalachian French Canadian/Pèlerinage ( Catholic), African American ( Numerous ), Italian American ( numerous ), Irish American ( Hundreds ), Hispanic Americans ( Dozens ), and several hundred residents who are descended from those original settlers from England or Scotland. With so much history and diversity existing within its borders it is no wonder that Martin County has been called “the cradle of West Virginia” by some historians!

The town of Martinsburg was founded in 1814 by James H. Martin, a Welsh immigrant who had settled in the area. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who died during the American Civil War in 1865. In 1919, Martinsburg became an independent city and in 1984 it became a full-fledged U.S. state capital.
