Martinsburg, West Virginia is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 10,534 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County. The name "Martinsburg" comes from Robert Stephenson's 1814 survey of what would become Mingo County. The first permanent settlers in what would become Martinsburg were three men who prospected for coal and gold near the confluence of the Kanawha River and Big Branch River in 1786. They named their new land "Mingo" after George Washington's father-in-law, James McMurtry of Scotland. In 1814, surveyor Robert Stephenson established a post office here with five other settlements along the Kanawha River as part of his surveys for a new railroad route between Winchester and Louisville, Kentucky. He named this new town "Martinsburg," after General Elisha Mercer (1757–1836) who had served in distinction during the American Revolution as an aide to British general Marquis de Lafayette. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the railroad line and its position as the county seat of Mingo County. By 1870, Martinsburg had over 11,000 residents and was one of several towns across America that benefited from President Ulysses S. Grant's 1869 Morrill Land Grant Act which gave federal lands to states via homesteading procedures. The town continued to grow until World War I when it lost most of its population due to military service or forced migration abroad. In 1939, Martinsburg became nationally known for hostingthe annual National Football League championship game between America'sfavorite team—the Baltimore Colts—and England's favorite team—the New York Giants—at Municipal Stadium on Memorial Day weekend before an audience of 71,853 people Kraft Foods Inc.'s Shamrock Shrimp Co., Inc., Merchants' Exchange Furriers Incorporated and many others contributed $1 million towards construction costs which included 5 miles (8 km) of high voltage power lines running through downtown Martinsburg; 25 miles (40 km) each side thereof; 100 water tanks; 1 mile (1 km) wide streets laid out in straight rows downwind from Main Street; 12 buildings erected for football games including two training fields large enough to house 30 teams each surrounded by wire fences where players could practice without fear of being hit; a 4-story dormitory housing NFL players on one side while business people lived above on Watergate Street; a 40-acre (16 hectare) park surrounding Municipal Stadium complete with playgrounds and baseball diamonds
