According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Martinsburg, West Virginia, has a total area of 33.1 square miles (87.2 square kilometers). The population was 10,948 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, there were 11,362 people residing in Martinsburg. The racial makeup of Martinsburg is 94% white and 2% black.
In 1802, the first white man to set foot in Martinsburg was James K. Polk. The town was founded on the site of a Native American village that had been abandoned by the tribe after an attack by whites. In 1824, General John C. Fremont and his army destroyed Indian villages in what is now West Virginia and Martinsburg became one of Fremont's primary military posts. The town also grew as a trading center for goods brought overland from Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1861, when America seceded from the British Empire,Martinsburg became part of the Confederate States of America. The town's role in the Civil War was both significant and short-lived: Confederate forces abandoned it shortly after Union forces arrived to retake it. After the war, Martinsburg reverted to American control and remained an agricultural community until World War II when it began to experience population growth due to its location at the intersection of two major highways. The postwar period saw many new development projects undertaken in Martinsburg: A steel plant was built in 1955; a chemical plant was established in 1978; and a shopping mall was constructed in 1990. In 2002, Martinsburg accepted an invitation from UNESCO to become one of its member cities
