Martinsburg, West Virginia is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The town name is derived from the Potomac River. It is part of the Wheeling–Charleston metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Martinsburg were French traders in 1607 and 1608. General George Washington traveled to Martinsburg twice during his military campaigns in 1781 and 1782, but he never settled there permanently. In 1825, Joshua Frye organized a Methodist church in what is now Martinsburg, and soon after began construction of the first school building in Kanawha County. In 1832, John Wesley founded Methodism here as well and dedicated his new church to God onJuly 15th of that year. In 1865, Union general Ulysses S. Grant battle-tested Martinsburg against Confederate forces near Walthall Junction where he was wounded for the third time that year during the Battle of Antietam Creek Bridge Campaign On July 1st 1865, four days after General Grant's third wounding at Antietam Creek Bridge Campaign - just two years prior to his death - Mrs. Lincoln addressed a large crowd of people gathered around her home on Valley Street in Martinsburg about Reconstruction: "There can be no question but that our young nation will have great success hereafter if we are all forward with this work." Her words inspired many others within the community to join forces with President Abraham Lincoln's newly established Freedmen's Bureau - an agency which aimed to help former slaves become self-sufficient Americans With land available for development and continued growth following World War II (the war caused increased demand for goods produced by American soldiers stationed overseas), businesses such as Ford Motor Company moved into town beginning in 1951; while other industries such as mining followed suit over time including chemical companies before finally becoming extinct through natural causes or industry consolidation respectively Today much of what once made up Martinsburg Town Centre remains intact including buildings from both eras such as First Baptist Church (1885), Masonic Lodge (1926), Chamber Of Commerce Building (1951) & School Annex (1963). Martinsburg, West Virginia is a town located in Mingo County, West Virginia. The population was 5,828 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 as a trading post on the Ohio River by Capt. Levi Martin and his party of Pike's Expeditionists. After the establishment of Mingo County, Martinsburg became its capital in 1824. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved his army from Richmond to Martinsburg to take up winter quarters, he ordered his 1st Brigade under Maj. Gen. Prentiss Mifflin to march through the town and intoNYSEa Valley for supplies. The Union forces stopped at the edge of town and munitions were unloaded before continuing their march down Valley Street towards Winchester Junction where they would cross back over the Ohio River and march east again to join General Ulysses S. Grant's army at Harper's Ferry on Christmas Day 1861. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history including being purchased by President James Kellar Johnston in 1906 for $2 million; becoming part of Mingo County; being annexed by Huntington (WV) in 1907; becoming a city in 1960; experiencing major construction projects such as building Interstate 81 which passed through it between 1978-1992 and adding an arena/ Events Center which housed both small-time high school games and professional wrestling events until it closed after 2008; losing its status as a city due to annexation by Huntington again in 2013; then regained city status following approval of an ordinance change that allows for more growth within the boundaries of Martinsburg while still keeping downtown open as a cultural center with nightlife options available outside of business hours Martinsburg has had several significant people associated with it such as Captain Levi Martin who founded the town, John Fenton who served as Mayor from 1920-1925, Wm Jennings who represented Mingo County during World War II and later became United States Senator from West Virginia from 1950-1955, Drayton Sheets Sr., Jr., who was mayor from 1974-1978 and 1990-1994, BudPriestley who served as mayor from 2000-2002 and 2006-2008 Many businesses have been located within or around Martinsburg including Alcoa (now aluminum), Schlumberger (now slag & ash removal services), Mead Johnson (now nutrition products), Weirton Steel Works Incorporated (welding services), American Electric Power Company (electricity generation), First National Bank Of Commerce & Trust Company(bankruptcy case file).
