However, due to lack of support from General Grant, their attacks quickly stalled out and many Confederate soldiers were killed or captured before they could even reach their targets. In addition, most of the Union troops were also inexperienced and largely uncoordinated; as a result, they suffered heavy losses as well. By late afternoon on October 12th, only a few hundred Union troops remained in Martinsburg while more than two thousand Confederates lay dead or wounded around it. In total, over four hundred people died in the Battle of Martinsburg; most of these were civilians who were either killed by artillery fire or taken prisoner after being caught between both sides during the fighting. Additionally, over two thousand men were injured in this battle alone. This event is often cited as one of the deadliest clashes during the American Civil War and helped determine which side would ultimately winthe war.
