Martinsburg is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County. The first permanent settler in what is now Martinsburg was David Glasscock, who arrived in 1781. The town was founded on April 6, 1811 by John Cranch and James Swanton. It became part of Mingo County on December 12, 1822. In 1838 it amalgamated with nearby Cross Keys to form the larger city of Martinsburg. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell occupied Martinsburg and destroyed most of the town's buildings during his retreat from Winchester before wintering near Fairfax Court House in Virginia. Eastman's Union Army attacked Ewell February 15–16 at Paynesville Junction just east of present-day Martinsburgh; about 60 men under Captain John Hughes volunteered to support Eastman but were massacred by Confederate forces led by Major General Prentiss Pickett overran their positions and recaptured all traces of the unit after pushing them back into West Virginia for good. Afterward many local residents joined Union troops as they marched through Mingo County to reinforce General Ulysses S. Grant's army marching against Confederate General Robert Ewell near Petersburg, Virginia on April 9th 1865 when that battle ended decisively for the Union forces; many others took up arms against the Confederacy throughout Reconstruction (1865-1941). After World War II much development took place within Martinsburg limits as a result of coalmining and manufacturing - including some important military installations such as Fort Lewis National Laboratory which opened in 1951 – until those industries peaked around 1970 when automation began taking hold across much industry across America. In 1825, the town of Martinsburg was founded on the Potomac River by George Washington and his army. The town grew rapidly in its early years, with a population of around 100 people in 1828. In 1840, the town had become an important commercial center for the surrounding area and had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1850, Martinsburg had become an important military outpost and had a population of over 4,000 people. The town was renamed West Virginia in 1863 after Lieutenant Colonel John Troup's brigade attacked and captured Fort Donelson on November 12th that year.
