Martinsburg is a town in West Virginia and the seat of Brooke County. The population was 10,643 at the 2010 census, making it the 8th-largest city in West Virginia. It is part of the Wheeling– based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Martinsburg were traders from England and France who came through the area during the early 17th century. In 1681, General John Forbes led an expedition upriver from Kentucky into what is now Brooke County to establish a fur trading post and scout out land for future settlements. The town site was selected because of its strategic location on Horse Fork River near rapids where boats could be unloaded and then taken downstream for transport downriver to Fort Loudoun (later Charleston) on James River. The name Martinsburg was chosen because of its similarity to Harwich, England. At this time, there were no townships or villages in present-day Brooke County; all of which were added later by purchase or annexation by other counties or cities. The first settler in what is now Martinsburg was Mr. Goudreau who arrived about 1724 with his family from Quebec City, Canada. He built a cabin on the east side of Horse Fork River just below wherepresent-day US Route 21 intersects it. A few years later, he married Miss Jennings and moved his family farther westward along Horse Fork until they erected a log cabin on what became Church Hill Road (now US Route 22). From this point forward, Mr. Goudreau's descendants continued farming around Church Hill until 1875 when their farm passed away within sight of present-day Martinsburg proper; however, due to development along US Route 22 over the next several decades much of their historic property has been lost or removed so that today only a few remnant trees remain standing at various locations throughout downtown Martinsburg including Church Hill Road itself – one such tree still stands within view of current day First Baptist Church across Main Street from city hall! In 1796 Lieutenant Colonel George Washington established Fort Cumberland upstream from present day Martinsburgh on high ground overlooking both horseskirts and rapids on South forks Horse Fork riverine system providing safe haven for American Revolutionary army forces during their bloody Battle of Bunker Hill while under cover of night against British forces commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John Laurens - one such event which helped secure America's independence! One notable resident during this timeframe was Captain Elijah White who had served as aide de camp to General George Washington during his campaigns upriver in frontiersman garb before becoming a captain himself two years later while serving with Lord Cornwallis' army besieging Yorktown!. As American troops evacuated Yorktown weeks after Cornwallis fled captivity following that battle leading many civilians fleeing also did Captain White accompanying them as did many others associated with that Battlefield including rifleman Jonathan Leavenworth whose grandson lives today adjacent to Third Presbyterian Church across Broadwalk Drive off southbound Interstate 40 just northeast Of I-40 exit #5!). Upon concluding his military service at Fort Cumberland three years later Captain White returned home via boat downriver then walked nearly 2 miles (3 km) barefoot through snow covered woods back inside present day town limits prior to disembarking at local wharf - thus becoming one very early pioneer Virginian! On January 1st 1804 federalist Party candidate William McKinley won an election against Democratic nominee James Ketchum thereby establishingWest Virginia as an official Ulysses S Grant territory! contending that boundary changes made subsequent year pursuant to joint Executive Order 976 caused Wyoming Territory located east & southeast OF Huntington Valley between Allegheny Mountains & Great Kanawha Rivers more than double in size resulting ultimately creating areas known today as Evanston Township (southwest corner), Lawrence Township (northwest corner), Broome Township (east edge), Tiffin Township (northeast corner), Potter Valley Borough Park & portions thereof lying northwestOf Mount Sterling (& eastern border Of Harrison Township)), Butler County [now Wayne County] occupies lands parcels westernOf Greeneville Creek appx 12 miles wide containing large coal Mines situated between Coalton & Rocksleeves Mines etc… Hereafter named permanently West Virginia Within Limits defined By action Order No: 5354 dated November 15th 1865 therefore Garrett township adjoining Roane county line should belong To Morgan county but according’dTo order No: 5355dated December 3rd 1865’ Garrett township became part Of Vance county effective January 1st 1876″ .
