Martinsburg is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,620 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Charleston metropolitan area. Martinsburg is located on the Potomac River and its downtown district includes the historic courthouse and jail which are now used as a museum. The first white settler in Martinsburg was Andrew Jackson who arrived in 1788. He founded what became known as "Jackson's Ferry" on the river near present-day Martinsburg. Jackson's Ferry allowed travelers to cross the river without having to go through Pittsburgh or Yorktown Heights. By 1811, Jackson had two stores and seven families living in his town. Two years later, he erected a sawmill on the banks of the river and began shipping lumber to Wheeling and other nearby towns. In 1815, Andrew Jackson's eldest son John married Susanna Warner (1803-1870), daughter of General Nathaniel Warner (1768-1828) of Mingo County, Virginia. Susanna was one of six children born to General Nathaniel Warner and his second wife Mary Church (1776-1854). When John was elected as an officer for Mingo County during President James K Polk's 1844 campaign against Adams', he also served as a delegate from that county to Polk's ticket that year. John Jarrard built what is now known as "Jarrard House" in 1830 on land donated by his father-in-law George Washington Carrington II (1762-1834). The house continued to be used by Carrington family members until 1919 when it passed through inheritance to prominent West Virginian lawyer Clarence Darrow (1884-.1969). Darrow added four stories to the original structure over time; today it measures 202 feet long by 116 feet wide with five levels of attic space inside its octagonal tower rooms dating back to 1838/39 when they were converted into apartments upstairs while still being used as offices downstairs during prohibition days because no liquor could be sold above ground! On July 4th, 1916 - just three months after World War I ended - Darrow hosted President Woodrow Wilson at his home here for a dinner honoring American veterans' contributions thereto including former Lt.-Govs Edward Everett Hale (1905-)and holster manufacturer Edwin Sargent Smith Sr.. At that dinner also attended were future Supreme Court Justice Robert Hinson... local banker Vernon Cogburne,... state legislators James Muhlenberg [(1906-)], Daniel Webster [(1912-)], Cecil Beasley [(1920-)] In 1932 Jarrard’s grandson Will Cogburne wrote an article about his grandfather entitled “George Washington Carrington III: Pioneer Citizens – Yesterday And Today”published in “West Virginia History Notes”Volume XIII Number 2 pg 26 thru 31 Oct 1932 It should be noted that all these people were early settlers who made their mark before anything else started happening hereabouts! From these initial beginnings we have grown into this amazing community we know today! The word martini originated from this place where men would get together and drink vodka with ice cold lemonade called Martinis….. Nowhere else can you find such invention like Here………..the history lives on!

Martinsburg, West Virginia is a small town located in Mingo County, West Virginia. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Martinsburg is the county seat of Mingo County and home to the historic Fort Mifflin Museum. The first permanent white settler in what would become Mingo County was James Hance in 1792. By 1827, there were over fifty white families living in Mingo County and two black families had been established by that year. One of the earliest events to occur in Martinsburg was when a group of men from Yorktown erected a wooden frame courthouse on Main Street in 1827. This served as the court house for all of Mingo County until 1840, when it burned down. In 1830, John Marshall came to Martinsburg and began operating a gristmill on South High Street which became one of the largest mills in eastern Ohio. Marshall also built up some early businesses including an insurance agency and a store that he operated until his death in1861. In 1835, George Washington Lewis founded Lewis & Lewis Bank which still operates today out of Martinsburg with over $100 million in assets under management as of 2018 During the American Civil War, many people from Martinsberg lived close by or fought on opposite sides. At least three local men—John Biddle (1841-1924), Robert Ewell (1847-1923) and David Dixon (1851-1920)—were killed during fighting near their homes during the war years Most residents fled before battle reached their community although several houses were destroyed by fire after Confederate forces burned down nearby property
