Martinsburg, West Virginia is a small town in Mercer County, West Virginia. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1863 by Swedish settlers and named after Johannes Martinsius, an early settler. It became part of the United States in 1881. The first store in Martinsburg was built on Main Street in 1863 by John Dickey and his family. A post office called Martinsburg was established in 1865, and remained open until 1951. In 1881, the town became part of the newly formed United States when it merged with other settlements located within Mercer County. The town's original structure included a Methodist church, schoolhouse, Masonic lodge, blacksmith shop and store. In 1949 the community purchased land east of I-70 to build a new high school which opened in 1951. As of 2009 there are still two high schools active in Martinsburg - East High School (established 1861) and West High School (established 1923). In addition to its two high schools, Martinsburg also has a daycare center (2006), library (1951), four churches (Methodist; Baptist; Lutheran; Presbyterian) as well as several businesses including gas stations (2005), restaurants (2009), pharmacies (2008) and a recycling plant (2011). One significant factor that has helped support the growth of Martinezstown has been its proximity to I-70 which allows for easy access to both shopping malls and jobs throughout central West Virginia. Additionally,Martinezstown is home to numerous cultural attractions such as an annual Pumpkinfest from October through November which features artisans from all over America selling their handmade pumpkin products; monthly concerts featuring local music at various venues throughout the city; Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday celebration each year where downtown streets are decorated with large artificial trees complete with lemonade dispensers for children attending nearby public elementary schools; as well as numerous antique shops and boutiques that offer unique items from around the world

In 1863, during the American Civil War, Martinsburg was part of West Virginia Ulysses S. Grant’s army and sided with the Confederacy. It remained Union until 1865 when it surrendered to Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. After the war, Martinsburg began to grow as a commercial center and has since been called the “Old Town of Martinsburg” because of its historical significance.
