Martinsburg is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,564 at the 2000 census. It is the smallest of the seven towns in West Virginia and the only one located within Jefferson County. The town was named for General John Martin, who fought in the American Revolution against British forces. The first settler in Martinsburg was Captain John Gist, who built a cabin on land that now forms part of Martinsburg High School. In 1814, Colonel James Fenton founded what is now Martinsburg University. After serving as its first president, he died in office before his mandated term could be completed. His son-in-law Daniel Boone later served as university president and also played an important role in founding West Virginia State College (WVC) and Huntington University. In 1847, Major General George Washington Hancock leased 1,500 acres (4 km²) of land south of present day Martinsburg from Nicholas Hocking for $25 per acre ($2 per sq m). This area became known as "Hancock's Hill". Hancock moved to this location during the early 1800s to become self-sufficient and started raising livestock and growing crops. In 1880–1881 he constructed a log courthouse which still stands today on this site. He also donated land to WVC for use as an athletic field and park. In 1906, WVC purchased these lands from Hancock's widow Dorcas for $1 million dollars which made it the largest donation ever made to a westward expansion college system by any individual family.[citation needed] Military service played an important role in both aspects of life in earlyMartinsburg; men were drafted into service during both World Wars I and II where many residents took up arms against Nazi Germany or Japan respectively; however no military buildings remain from those wars Today most businesses are related to services such as transportation or healthcare These days nearly all families have at least one member working outside of home either full time or part time Some notable exceptions include students at Appalachian State University majoring in Business Administration/Commerce or Earth Science & Mathematics who often spend their summers living on campus

When the United States acquired West Virginia in 1876, it included all of present-day Martinsburg and parts of Huntington and Monongalia counties. In 1881, the USGS map of West Virginia showed only two small towns in that part of the state: Martinsburg and Parkersburg. In 1903, a group of farmers who had been living near Wheeling decided to move their farm to what is now Martinsburg when they found an abandoned ammunition depot on their property. The depot had been used as a munitions plant during World War I and II. The farmers started a community called Wheeling in 1907. They built a school, churches, stores and homes around the Depot - which became known as "the Hub." wheeling was eventually absorbed into Wheeling Township in 1923.
In 1814, the town of Martinsburg was founded by Methodist missionaries. In 1861, it became a county seat of West Virginia. The town was named for General George Armstrong Martin, who fought in the American Civil War and led an army to victory over Confederate forces at Gettysburg.
