Despite this downturn though, Martinsburg continued to grow steadily through the 1940s and into the 1950s thanks to various industrial opportunities that emerged during that period such as steel production (during which much of Mingo County's manufacturing base took place) and timber harvesting (which also played a significant role in recent growth). During periods of great political turmoil or social upheaval throughout American history - including several times during World War II - cities like Martinsburg have often been key nodes within those communities either due to their size or because they provide essential services such as education or commerce which have been hard pressed by other areas during times of unrest or change. This has been particularly true since Mingo County has long been known for being both an overwhelmingly Republican stronghold dating back to before America's founding days while also having some unique traits which have made it especially fertile ground for conservative politics: its large Anadarkos Indian reservation provides ample support for strong conservative voting blocs while also contributing significantly to local lore pertaining to Native American culture; its small size allows residents access to multiple channels of communication which can be critical during times of tumult or change; as well as its location within easy reachof major metropolitan areas like Pittsburgh/Philadelphia/Washington D.C./New York City all contribute importantly too (especially given historical precedents pointing towards increasing commercialization trends within rural Rustbelt counties). In 1923, Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous speech at Westminster Abbey was delivered here. In 1969, Martinsburg became part of Mingo County.
