The population of Martin County peaked at more than 100,000 in 1880 but has since declined significantly due to various factors such as loss of jobs in the coal industry and declines in agricultural production throughout West Virginia. In 2000, there were only about 20 residents living in the countyseat of Martinsburg combined with surrounding rural areas. Today, Martinsburg is an important center for education with several schools including Eastern Kentucky University and West Virginia University serving students statewide; it also hosts a variety of cultural events year-round including annual Shakespeare In The Park performance series and Art Festivals."
