Huntington became one of the first settlers in what is now West Virginia when he bought 640 acres of land northeast of present-day Wheeling, WV. By 1830, hunting season for deer had ended and most of the original settlers had left for other locations within Maryland or Virginia because of this new economic opportunity. However, many descendants of those early settlers continue to live in Huntington today and enjoy some aspects of its history such as free speech rights and access to education opportunities which are not typically available outside its borders.
