Huntington is a town in Huntington County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. The Huntington-Newport News Railroad passed through the town and still exists. The first settlers arrived in 1775 on horseback from Kentucky. They were led by Captain John Smith. When he died in 1779, his men took over his leadership and founded what is now Huntington as a trading post on the Monongahela River. It was renamed Newport News after General James Ketchum's victory at Battle of Monmouth (1701) near present-day Newport News Harbor. In 1814, George Washington erected a military fortification called Fort Monroe within the limits of what is now Huntington. The fortifications served as an early warning system for British forces attacking America from Canada and later saw action during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). Although Native Americans had been living in the area for centuries before European settlement began, itwas only after white men began to arrive that they were organized into tribes or nations such as the Potawatomi and Shawnee. At first they hunted game and gathered plants and berries; however soon they became powerful warriors with their own villages and towns along the rivers where they lived off agriculture until forced migration to reservations came about due to conflict with Ulysses S Grant's Indian Bureau during World War II.
