Huntington is a city in and the county seat of Brooke County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 14,521 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Brooke County by population. Huntington is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,772 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County and the home to Huntington High School and Huntington University. The name "Mingo" means "a place where buffalo roam." The first permanent settler in what is now Huntington was John Marshall who arrived in 1776. He named his new land after himself and built a cabin there on the Allegheny River. Other early settlers included George Washington's father-in-law, John Adams, James Caldwell, Daniel Boone, and Hugh Mercer. In 1805, Indian Chief Tecumseh led a Shawnee tribe into Mingo County to seek revenge for being forced out of their homeland by General Andrew Jackson's forces during the Mexican–American War. Aftermath of that conflict resulted in an influx of white settlers as war refugees began flowing back into Ohio and Kentucky from Mexicoland (present day Texas). In 1818 Wm Blythe founded another small town about four miles west of downtown Huntington on tributary of Kanawha River called Greenbrier Falls. That settlement failed because it was too far from marketplaces for its size and not connected by waterways to other settlements nor had any trade with others on the river valley beyond its own limited reach or ability to export goods via boat or barges polluted by salt water derived from nearby mountains

The present name of the town is derived from John Hughes' estate in nearby Monongalia County and is one of two towns named for General George Washington that are still functioning as settlements within their former boundaries (the other being Alexandria). The community operated a small local grocery store and post office until 1955 when it merged with Petersburg to form Petersburg-Huntington-Petersburg. In 2006 the school district closed both schools due to budget cuts but reopened them as part of an effort to revitalize downtown which had been largely abandoned since the late 1990s. In early 2007 they replaced all streetlights with LED light fixtures after complaints about finding out at night what was happening on Elm Street without lights
