In 1881, Huntington was founded as a small town in Kanawha County, West Virginia. By 1902, the population had grown to over 10,000 people and the town became an important center of commerce and agriculture. The development of the railroad in 1903 helped increase trade and industry in Huntington. In 1907, a law was passed that allowed firearms sales to be conducted without a license from the state government. This change helped spur the growth of gun ownership in Huntington. In 1920, President Warren G Harding signed into law the National Firearms Act which made it easier for citizens to buy firearms. The act also created a registration system for firearm owners. In 1934, Congress passed the Distinguished Service Medal Act which awarded military veterans with certificates of merit for their contributions to society. The act also established the Department of Defense Acquisition Review Board which oversaw military procurement processes. Over time, Huntington has experienced various political changes which have impacted its economy and culture. Since 1994, Huntington has been represented by one congressman – Don Young – who is leading efforts to keep local businesses open and attract new investment to the community. Additionally, young adults are working to revive old buildings and create new businesses in order to help support their families while they continue growing older than their parents did when they were first born into homes like theirs: "The idea seems pretty simple: Let’s turn these old warehouses into places where people can bring their businesses back up-and-running so they can stay here." He built a cabin on "Sugar Hill" which he named after his sugar plantation in Maryland where he had been born. Soon afterward other settlers started arriving, including John Cramer who purchased "Hollywood" from Abram Sperling in 1829. In 1830 John Cramer married Anna Huntington who had come over from England with her family three years earlier. They moved into the new home and soon developed a small farmers market near their house that served local residents as well as county residents and tourists alike. By 1840, when one of Abram Sperling's sons died suddenly while working on his farm, more than fifty people lived near "Hollywood." By 1850 all but two of those original settlers were gone and replaced by others who arrived during or after the American Civil War: Andrew Hargrave cameover in 1865 from Vermont; George Wickersham came over from Tennessee in 1870;and Elijah Cummings arrived fromPennsylvania in 1876-77。 All these newcomers brought their own culture with them, which helped shape early Huntington society . After Union troops burned down part of town center during its occupation during the war some efforts were made to rebuild but only lasted until around 1880 when most of downtown was destroyed again by fire *. Most importantly though was how Thaddeus Stevens became Mayor of Huntington during this time period *. Stevens spearheaded development within Downtown area making it much more vibrant today through architecture projects likeowntown library,renowned restaurant/bars/nightclub calledthe White Horse Saloon (now known as Pinnacle) and refurbished industrial buildings such asthe Biltmore Hotel*. This turned downtown into one big open space that attracted businesses, artists and people looking for an escape from everyday life back then
