After the Civil War, Huntington was a thriving town with businesses and citizens. However, the Union army destroyed much of Huntington in 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle caused heavy losses for the Union army and many residents were displaced. A new shopping mall called "Towne Center" opened in 2006 adjacent to downtown; it features about 25 stores including Sears Holdings' Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Department Store Inc., JCPenney Inc., and Marshall Field's department store chain. However other anchor retailers have closed or left the area over recent years: Kmart,[1] Home Depot,[2] Best Buy,[3]π[4] and Lowe's[5]. In December 2009 Huntington announced that it would be building a $130 million shopping mall which will include anchors such as Lord & Taylor[6], Saks Fifth Avenue,[7], Neiman Marcus [8], Bergdorf Goodman[9], Belkpur Souq Centre[10], Michaels Stores Inc.[11],[12],[13],[14]), Marshalls[/15][16],[17][18]] (the largest retailer within 15 miles of Downtown), Anthropologie[19],[20], Nordstrom Rack21 ($) - all anchored by Macy's - along with approximately 100 specialty shops.[22],[23][/24]

The first permanent settler in what would become Huntington was George Washington Cadwallader in 1776. He and his family moved from Maryland to this area and started a small farm near present-day Parkersburg. In 1819, John Cadwallader established another small farm about two miles west of present-day Huntington on the Ohio River opposite Kentucky. This second home became known as "Cadwallader's Ferry". In 1868, Daniel Boone founded Boonesborough after he and three companions journeyed downriver from Cumberland Gap in West Virginia to find a route to Cincinnati, Ohio. Boone named his new settlement after himself and erected a log cabin on what is now known as Elk Street just south of Main Street in Boonesborough. A post office called Boonestown was established there in 1870, and the name was changed to Huntington late that year when the Union Pacific Railroad arrived with its trainloads of settlers. When Appomattox Court House fell into disrepair during World War II due to combat damage across much of America, many locals decided it should be replaced by an airfield so their homes could still be used during operations like transportations etc., but plans never materialized... until now! When I toured around town today I saw all these WWII relics (elderly folks who live there remember!), including an old P-38 Lightning fighter jet takeoff ramp/control tower which had been completely destroyed by fire back in 1978 (!), just steps away from where I once sat inside! Now that's history! This article does not mention any other settlements or events located within present day Huntington or its vicinity prior to European contact or colonization by indigenous peoples... however some ruins may have been discovered which remain undocumented (please see notes below).
