The town and county are named for General James A. Huntington who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a brigadier general in the Union army. The first white person to settle in what is now Huntington Township was George Washington Hammond on July 4, 1783. Hammond worked with Chief Justice John Marshall to create a township of that name which became part of Mingo County on February 3, 1821. On November 11, 1826, Huntingdon Township was created from parts of Mingo and Logan Counties when it merged with Greenbrier County. When Greenbrier County was divided into two parts by Congress in 1877, Huntington Township remained part of Greenbrier County but its citizens were given an option to move to either upstream or downstream counties if they desired; they chose to move to Wheeling because that is where their family had lived for generations before moving back home again after World War II (the only other choice). When WV Code No. 5 came into effect on January 1st 1959, most residents within Huntington Borough elected not to follow it and opted instead for their own municipal government separate from that of Wheeling proper; this referendum resulted in the creation of Huntington Town Council which functions as a village type governing body within the limits of Huntingdon Borough although most day-to-day operations take place within the boundaries of both entities without any interruption or conflict as long as each municipality complies with all state and local laws & regulations During much recent history there have been several attempts by Huntertonsville residents to secede from Huntingdon Borough due primarily to various issues including lack of affordable housing options within the borough while also feeling like certain decisions made by both bodies were not properly consulted or honored during previous administrations

During World War II, Huntington served as a training ground for American troops during the European Theater of Operations. After America's victory in 1945, it became one of the most heavily populated areas in West Virginia due to its proximity to coal mining and military production sites. During the late 19th century and early 20th century there were many waves of immigrants who came to work in local mills or businesses such as clothing stores and grocery stores; however, since 2000s there has been a reverse trend with more people moving away fromWest Virginia because of its high cost of living
