Huntington, West Virginia was one of the most important agricultural and manufacturing centers in the United States for over a century. The area became known as "The Gunsight Capital of the World" for its many gun shops and manufacturers that produced rifles, shotguns, handguns and other firearms. guns were first introduced into Huntington in 1837 when Captain Moses Fleetwood acquired a rifle from David Wainwright. In 1838, Major General John C. Fremont purchased 6 rifles from Captain Fleetwood. In 1840, Captain Fleetwood's son-in-law, James A. Armstrong opened a store on First Street called "Nelson's Rifle Shop." Nelson had been involved in the early development of American arms manufacture. Armstrong manufactured rifles and pistols until his death in 1865. His son-in-law continued to operate the shop until it merged with another store on Second Street in 1868 to become known as Armour & Armstrong Armory Company Ltd.. In 1860, Andrew Barton founded Barton rifle company after purchasing an interest in Nelson's Rifle Shop from Armstrong’s widow. Barton manufactures rifles both military and sporting models under license from various firearm manufacturers including Colt & Co., Remington Arms Company, Savage Arms Company and others. He also built several mills which produced barrel cloth for firearms production. Barton died in 1896 but his company continued to produce firearms until 1926 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Incorporated

The first gun sights in Huntington, West Virginia were a British-made "Fowler" sight and a 15-inch monocular. The Fowler sight was created in 1836 and it was mounted on a .75 caliber rifle. The monocular was invented by Dr. George Washington Frazier in 1859 and it was used to view targets from a long distance.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va., May 9, 1865-April 2, 1881 Huntington was an unincorporated community in Huntington County, West Virginia located on the Ohio River upstream from the present-day city of Wheeling. At one time it was a very small town with a population of only 100 people. The first store in what is now Huntington opened in 1859 and continued to operate until 1951. The first post office opened in 1861 and operated until 1865. In 1863, Major General Robert Ewell Sherman's army crossed the river here during his invasion of Kentucky and destroyed many bridges as they went through which transportation became much more difficult for the soldiers and their families who had to walk or boat across. This made Huntington an important strategic military objective for Sherman's forces as he completed his march downstream into central West Virginia. After Union troops destroyed most of the bridges between Wheeling and other points along the Ohio River (except for one about two miles west of where today’s Stevenson Park stands), General Sherman ordered his command to build new crossings at various points on this stretch of river so that supplies could be transported more easily between our armies. The old bridge over which US 50 currently runs was one such crossing built by Union forces during this period; it also served as a hospital for Confederate wounded during the war years while awaiting medical attention back home at Fort Donelson outside Nashville, Tennessee. On April 2, 1881, after three years of hard fighting against numerous Confederate attacks throughout western West Virginia, Union troops finally captured Eastville following a nine-hour battle fought amidst heavy rain and strong winds. During the siege they burned many homes and businesses which contributed greatly tothe feeling ofcommunity bitterness that had been prevalent since prior to battle day...
Huntington was founded in 1819 by John Huntington and his brother, James. The first post office in the town was established in 1825. In 1830, Huntington became a county seat of West Virginia. The city of Huntington was incorporated in 1904.
