Huntington is a town in and the county seat of West Virginia. It is located in Monongalia County, about southeast of Morgantown, the state capital. The population was 11,028 at the 2010 census. Huntington’s beginning dates back to 1810 when Hugh Hargrave and his brother James founded what would become Huntington Beach on land that they had purchased from the Shawnee Nation. In 1819, John Covington arrived and began trading with the Shawnees and became known as a “citizen trader” in Huntington Beach. During this time, Englishman Jobson settled some acres east of town along the Monongahela River where he built a log cabin known as Jobson Station. By 1830, most of present-day Huntington had been established by individuals or families who decided to move there because of its advantageous location, access to water resources, and easy trade with surrounding counties. The first post office in Huntington was established in 1824 and was called Killianville after Major General Hugh Kincaid who had fought for American independence during the War of 1812. The first settler in what is now Huntington Beach was George Washington Hardin who arrived around 1800 CE along with his family from Jamestown VA. Many other early settlers include: Elijah Pemberton (1811-1875), Isaac Kelley (1788-1864), Abijah Hicks (1791-1868), William Wayles (1793-1831), Jeremiah Granger (1800-1875), John Butler (1800-1868), Moses Hazard (died c 1799) and David Sutherlin (died c 1840). In 1830, two years after settlement began in present day Huntington Beach proper, Benjamin Fenton laid out a six acre lot on which he erected a house which served as the nucleus for what would become today’s downtown area including today’s main streets – Delaware Avenue/Brentwood Avenue – as well as much oftoday’s commercial district including Third Street/Eighth Street corridor between State Route 224W and Market Street which runs through downtown today. That same year also saw another important development when Andrew Dixon opened up what would later be called Dixon Summit Road near where Main Street crosses IHK Drive today; this road soon became one ofthe major thoroughfares leading into downtown from rural areas north of town center
Huntington is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. Huntington is the county seat of Mingo County and home to the Mingo County Courthouse and Jail. The name "Huntington" derives from the Potomac River's current location near its confluence with the Ohio River. The first post office in Huntington was established on March 7, 1827, by Nicholas Biddle. It was renamed Huntington in 1853 after Samuel W. Huntington, one of the original incorporators of Mingo County. The first store opened in 1828 in what is now downtown Huntington and became known as "The Mercantile Exchange." In 1902, construction began on what is now Old Main School (now called First Baptist Church) which stood until 1924 when it was destroyed by a fire that also destroyed many other buildings in downtown Huntington. In 1907, Drury Bros., an American druggist, built a large brick building on Third Street which served as their store until 1949 when they moved to Greenbrier Mall across I-270 from Greenbrier Resort Casino where they remain today. In 1922-23 a park was planned for Downtown but never completed due to financial difficulties; it would eventually become part of Central Park which still exists today. In 1923-24 work started on then existing Union Pacific Railroad track through downtown that would later be added as part of mainline Pennsylvanian railroad lines out of Harrisburg into West Virginia allowing for easier transport of goods between states and increased commerce within Appalachia and West Virginia itself during this time period resulting in more jobs being created within the town than ever before with businesses such as Piggly Wiggly becoming well known throughout Pennsylvania primarily because their food could be transported quickly across state lines without having to go through Pittsburgh or Baltimore City where prices were too high elsewhere on national highways
