In 1865, John D Rockefeller donated land to build a cotton gin and factory which would become one of the largest in America; this gave rise to what is now known as "Rockefeller Center". At this time Huntington also developed into an agricultural center with large-scale production of hay and corn). By 1900, however, industrialization had taken over much of the economy while agriculture stopped growing altogether due to lack of resources (coalition mines closed during World War II). Eventually economic decline led to annexation by neighboring Harrisonburg in 1984 which eliminated most vestiges of agricultural production while also removing many jobs from town residents (the last major employer died in 1999). The population growth seen throughout most recent decades has largely been due to people moving into Huntington from surrounding counties (Kanawha County experienced a 5% increase between 2000 and 2010) while remaining employed within local communities through business ownership or service rendered (involving things like restaurant management, retail sales etc.). As recently as 2008-2009 only 1% of all businesses were located within city limits making it difficult for residents to participate fully in cultural aspects associated with their hometown like music festivals/festivals/concerts etc., despite efforts made by some residents through social media postings/meetups etc.. However this trend seems set to reverse beginning around 2020 when more businesses will be located within city limits along with more opportunities for residents to engage directly with their hometown culture

In 1865, Nicholas Biddle founded the National Bank of West Virginia which later changed its name to First National Bankshares Incorporated in 1923 after merging with three other banks statewide: National City Bank (now Wells Fargo), Citizens State Bank (now Capital One) and Pittsburgh Savings Institution (now miguel sosa). In 1927 First National Bankshares merged with Trust CompanyAmerica Corporation to become Prudential Insurance Company of America (). In 1928 Prudential Insurance company merged with American International Group plc., creating one of the world’s largest insurance companies (). In 1957 American International Group plc., merged with British Telecom plc., creating British Telecommunications Limited (). Today Huntington is home to two universities: West Virginia University–Charleston and Marshall University () which are both private universities while also hosting several small businesses including Apple Inc.'s headquarters () as well as La Quinta Resort & Casino ().
