Huntington is a town in Huntington County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 6,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Huntington County. The community of Monongalia was founded by German refugees in 1820 and became part of Huntington in 1825. The first firearms were used to shoot game near Monongalia Creek in what is now Huntington on December 5, 1792 by American Revolutionary War soldier Captain John Miller. Huntington's earliest settlers were Quakers who had arrived from Pennsylvania in 1794. They hunted deer and bears for meat and clothing during the winter months until they could get their hands on supplies from across the Ohio River or through trade with other Native American groups. In 1824, Englishman James Lanyon purchased 5 acres (2 ha) of land northeast of present-day Monongalia for $725 cash plus 10% interest payable annually. He named his new land "Monongalia." Lanyon began building a log cabin that would serve as his headquarters for hunting and trading with local tribes including the Shawnee and Potomac Cherokee. In 1830 he married Maria Cooksfield who was also from Pennsylvania and they started a small farm next door to their home which later became known as Cooksfield Place after them both moved away from Monongalia Creek when it became part of West Virginia in 1912. Two years later on August 16, 1827 George Stephenson built an iron road over Monongahela River linking Pittsburgh with Baltimore via Wheeling before going into service November 29th, 1772 as part of British North America's first transcontinental railroad known as the "Great Western Road". This event helped spur development aroundMonongahela Falls where steamboats carrying goods upriver brought people such as Andrew Carnegie and others within driving distance of industrial jobs on the riverfront while also allowing travelers access to these unique natural attractions like Cooke’s Falls National Recreation Area located just outside town Limits today! On October 19th 1861 Union Major General Ulysses S Grant convened a meeting at Battle Mountain Summit close to present day Monongahela Falls to discuss strategies against Confederate forces operating along this section of North Carolina’s Eastern border under General Robert E Lee which included areas immediately south & east of our little town limits! After hearing presentations about wagon trains being infiltrated by Confederates hereabouts General Grant ordered all soldiers surrounding Fort McAllister inside our Limits military post WITHOUT DISCUSSING ANY LIABILITY WITH THE CITIZENS OF MONONGALIA FOR THEIR PART IN THIS UNCONDUCTFUL ACTION!!! MONONGALIA WOULD GO ON TO BE A FACTORY OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS FOR OVER 100 YEARS DUE TO COMMUNITY INVESTMENT AND SUPPORT FROM OUR LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS!!!

John Huntington was born in 1736 in the town of West Point, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He emigrated to America with his family in 1763 and settled in Charlestown Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. John married Mary Baer on January 4, 1769 in Monmouth County. They had four children: James (1770-1846), Mary Baer (1772-1853), John Baer (1774-1868) and Caroline Baer (1776-1859). In 1779 John became a naturalized U.S. citizen and worked as a cooper at the same mill where he met his wife. They soon started a family and moved to Huntington until James's death in 1846 when they located at 138th Street and Orange Avenue in Huntington Beach, California. John died there on December 12th, 1868 at the age of 89 years old.

By the time of the Revolutionary War, women had started wearing guns as well, and pistols were beginning to be popular among men. In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, Union soldiers began to return home in droves and need new clothes to cover up their weapons. A group of businessmen decided to start a company called "Dixon's Riflemen" to produce uniforms for these returning troops. Huntington is a town in Huntington County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Charleston Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Huntington County was William Crouch in 1811. A post office called Huntington was established in 1823, and remained in operation until 1861. In 1886, the Chilton Coal and Mining Company built a large mine near present-day Huntington that produced coal until 1911. The mine closed because of overproduction and competition from other mines. In 1908, the Huntingdon Savings Bank was founded in Huntington by Jethro Sibley and others. It became one of the largest banks west of the Allegheny Mountains when it opened its doors to customers in 1910. In 1914, Huntingdon High School opened for students grades 10 through 12 after years of planning by school board members Tom Hinton and Clyde Davenport Jr.. At that time, only boys could attend school there. After World War I ended, enrollment increased as men returned to work and women began entering the workforce; however, girls were not admitted until 1927 when they were offered a choice between high schools across the county or attend local academies while still enrolled at their respective schools. In 1923 The Huntingdon News Publishing Company was founded with five reporters and editors who covered news throughout western West Virginia from its inception until 1984 when it merged with The Gazette (the former Morgantown Courier) to form current day The Daily Sentinel Publications company which produces all major daily newspapers statewide including "The Sentinel" (Huntington), "WV Times Herald" (Wheeling), "Daily Mail" (Manchester), "News Leader" (Emmonsburg), "Danville Herald", "Richmond Enterprise-Dispatch", etc... From 1896 to 1912 there were also two weekly newspapers: “The Cavalier” published every Wednesday evening at 7 p m., starting on July 1st1896 under editor Wm Gentryauer; later renamed “The Patriot”; then discontinued on October 30th 1912 due to financial instability caused by lack of readership & changing times
