In 1819, George Washington and his group of Mountaineers stayed at John Hunt's cabin for nine days while on their way to survey the new territory that would become West Virginia. On July 8, 1825, General James A. Garfield visited Huntington as part of his campaign against Andrew Johnson in Harrisonburg County and spent three nights there before continuing on to Winchester, Kentucky. The first post office in Huntington was opened on October 27, 1828. In 1830–31, President James Kenedy established a school system which included an academy for boys and girls under twelve years old and a Mechanics Institute for adults over twenty-one years old. The institute became known as the Normal School of Western Virginia which continued operation until 1907 when it merged with West Virginia State University to formWest Virginia University System. In 1865-66 General Order No 1 set out guidelines for military recruitment within West Virginia during the American Civil War; this order led to many black men from Huntington working as soldiers throughout the war effort including Fredrick Douglass who later served as Governor of Mississippi from 1901-1903
Huntington was founded in 1765 by George Washington. The town became a Federal district in 1821 and was named for General James Huntington, who commanded the Union army during the American Revolution. In 1865, Huntington was burned by Confederate forces as part of the Battle of Gettysburg.
