When James Fenton discovered the Huntington coal mines in 1825, it was a wild trip to find a place where coal could be found. The area that now includes Huntington was originally part of Mingo County and was known as the "Valley of Coal." In 1827, when Fenton brought his company to Huntington, he found a deposit of coal so rich that he decided to build an assay office and plant for processing the coal. For more than 50 years, Huntington has been one of the most importantcoal mining communities in West Virginia. Included among the town's first settlers were John Fitzpatrick and his family, who arrived in 1828. By 1835, over 1,000 people had moved into what is now Huntington from all over Mingo County. The town grew rapidly due to its location and its access to transportation resources such as wagon roads andsteamboats. Huntington quickly became known as one of the leading anthracite coal mining towns in America because of its excellent production yields and its ability to produce large quantities of product at a low cost. The town also became well-known for its famous "Huntington Hounds" dogs which helped keep miners safe while they worked underground. Throughout its history, Huntington has been home to many companies which have made significant contributions to the community both during peacetime and during wartime. Many local businesses continue today as key players in their respective industries. In addition, many private citizens have expressed their support for preserving Huntingon's unique character by actively participatedin various initiatives aimed at preserving this most special corner of Appalachia

Huntington is a small town in West Virginia. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Huntington County. The first white settlers in what is now Huntington County were George Rogers Clark and his family, who arrived from Kentucky in 1776. At that time, the land that would become Huntington was part of Mingo County. In 1819, Huntington became part of Greenbrier County. The first post office was established in 1870, and the first store opened in 1871. In 1862, General Ulysses S. Grant's army passed through Huntington on its way to Gettysburg. As a result of this event, the community acquired a significant amount of historical significance and has been visited by many dignitaries over the years including Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton as well as Prime Minister Tony Blair during their visits to West Virginia between 2009-2011 respectively. In 1951, Hurricane Ira struck West Virginia and destroyed most of downtown Huntington with only some minor damage done to several other buildings nearby such as the United States Naval Observatory which still stands today (though closed for tours).
