In 1906, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company merged with the National Firearms Association to form George W. Brown & Sons, Incorporated. In 1959, Browning Manufacturing Corporation merged into Remington Firearms, Incorporated. The company remains a separate business entity to this day.
Fairmont is a small town in Webster County, West Virginia. The population was 1,822 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Webster County and lies on the southern edge of the Monongahela Valley. The community began as a log cabin settlement in 1811 and grew to become one of West Virginia's most important agricultural towns. Fairmont was named for former U.S. Congressman John Fairbanks (1799-1872).

Fairmont was a small town in West Virginia until the early 20th century. It is now a ghost town, located on the banks of the Kanawha River. The community was founded by white farmers in 1827 as Fairmont Station. William Fairmont, a Senator from Virginia and son of an English gentleman, donated land to the town and its first settler, John Hays, bought property in 1830. In 1837, Fairmont had a population of just seventy-five residents when it incorporated as a village. By 1860, however, the population had grown to 1,500 people and by 1870 it had reached 3,000 people. The first post office in Fairmont was established in 1835 and functioned for only two years before being closed due to financial problems. The first school in Fairmont was built in 1840 and served grades one through twelve. The first store opened atFairmount Avenue and Store Street on November 1, 1846. A sawmill began operations at this location in 1850 and continued operations until 1893; during that time it produced over 2 million boards per year for local mills. In 1861–1865 (the Civil War), Fairmount played an important role as both a Union military hospital and supply depot for McClellan’s army campaign against Confederate forces near Richmond. After the war ended on April 9th 1865, most of what remained of McClellan’s army converged upon Petersburg where they entrenched themselves around Fort Donelson; within three months much of McClellan’s original command lay dead or captured within sight of home base with little hope of reinforcement or escape across the Potomac River On May 8th 1865 General Ulysses S Grant ordered all Union Troops gathered around Petersburg to withdrawal across Rappahannock River because he believed that fortifications there would preoccupy Confederate troops long enough for him to march his remaining army into Richmond unimpeded A week later Commodore David Dixon sailed his USS Constitution upriver from Alexandria Bay to provide cover for General Robert E Lee’s retreat along the riverbank Aftermath: On July 10th 1865 Confederate general Stonewall Jackson surrounded Union positions at Harrisonburg Heights; after two days Jackson withdrew without achieving any results despite heavy losses including many casualties among his own men
