Fairmont, West Virginia is a town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in McDowell County. The first settlers to Fairmont were James McMillin and his family who arrived in 1793. They erected a cabin on an elevation above the present site of Fairmount Park. In 1847, John P. Maynard bought land from James McMillin and laid out a town called "Mountain View". He named it for his home state of Vermont where he had been born and raised. In 1869, Wm Hance built the first schoolhouse in Fairmont. A post office was established in 1870, but no mail ever reached Fairmont because of high postage rates for telegraph traffic between Roanoke and Charleston at that time. In 1872–73 Jno Ladd purchased 228 acres (100 ha) east of Fairmount Park from Thomas Pemberton for $1 million dollars which formed part of what is nowFairmount Park National Monument). Ladd donated this land to the government as part of an effort to promote farming in McDowell County by creating a national park that would protect natural resources important to the county's economy such as waterfalls and mountains
