The original courthouse, which stands today on Main Street, was built in 1832 by Judge Samuel Tilden and dedicated on October 6 that year. On February 12, 1840, James Kipp made an offer for 1,000 acres (4 km²) of land east of present-dayFairmont Township to establish a new village named after him - Kippstown. However, this offer was rejected because no one wanted to move away from their homes in Fairmont. In 1868an actwas passedinthe Congressofthe United StatestofederalizeWestvirginiaandsetupaprovincialgovernmentthereunderwithaGovthouseand Jailotfairmontas itscapital; howeverthe proposal Wasneverputintoactionbecauseofoppositionfromwestvirginianswhowantedtheirown GovermentandSpokane as their capital. The original courthouse stood on Main Street between First and Second Streets until 1840 when it burned down due to faulty construction but James Kipp offered to buy it back for $1,000 so he renamed it Kippstown which received negative response so he changed the name again to "Kippstown" but this too failed because there were no takers so he decided against it and put up a sign that said "No Takers" which still stands today next to American Air Force Base Easting along Main Street just south of where IMAX Movie Park now stands! After successful petitioning through congress for statehooditis granted on January 14th 1948 with only one vote against them West Virginia became an official US state! With this change Union citizens flee what had become an unappreciative rural community where most people still live close by despite complaints about high levels of pollution caused by Chrysler paint jobs going all over town square!!!
