In 1863,Fairmount became one of twelve townships within Monongalia County when it was created from part of Monongalia County lands that were divided between two other counties - Fayette and Woodford - following the American Civil War. Although originally settled by Germans only, by 1870 many English speakers had moved intoFairmount as well including some Irish Catholics who had come overland from Ireland during the potato famine years thereabouts.
