Fairmont is a small town in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The population was 1,763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling-Charleston-Fremont, WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fairmont has been inhabited by white Americans since 1792 when it was established as a post office on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fairmont were French fur traders who camped there in 1792 and 1793. As early as 1813 General John Forbes's army passed through on their way from Fort Monroe to fight against Mexico in Texas. AGRICULTURE: In 1814 Captain Edward Smith of Charlottesville, Virginia erected an extensive plantation near what is now Fairmont called Green Gables which he named after his daughter Cynthia (the name may have come from a nearby oak). At that time there were several large plantations around this area including Belknap Hill (later renamed Beaver Dam) and Canaan Manor (later called Monticello). By 1830 most of these had been abandoned due to lack of production or acquisition by new owners. Only two small plantations, Oneida and Misery Creek still exist today with significant acreage remaining attached to them although they are less developed than some other properties around Fairmont A number of transportation improvements were made during this time including turning an old logging road into a route for wagon traffic between Wheeling and Lexington; building a canal connecting the Potomac River and Elk Fork; creating a Turnpike between Wheeling and Fayetteville; completing construction of the West Virginia Central Railroad; and opening up interiorlands for farming by means such as draining swamps and improving irrigation systems When Ohioan settlers began arriving in Kanawha County during the late 19th century many chose to set up homes along Indian Path just east of present day Fairmount Road At first they set out cultivation fields but soon realized that making hay or driving cows would be more efficient ways to generate income so they turned their attention towards manufacturing while also importing goods necessary for everyday life such as beer, soap, flour and clothing This industrialization led to increased competition among businesses which ultimately led to job losses for some residents while increasing economic opportunities for others In 1909 company founder Coudert donated land at present day intersection of US 6&27 south of town for use as an amusement park featuring roller coasters, carrousels, water shows etcetera Between 1912-1915 two buildings on Main Street were used as barracks for local National Guard troops during World War I During World War II about 30 men worked at Ralphs Department Store located across from current day Post Office where Meineke’s gas station now stands . After 1945 most business owners closed down until 1984 when Parkway Broadcasting Corporation purchased all assets including buildings northward into town limits . This company operated three radio stations within town limits until 2000 when WDVE discontinued operations . Today only one structure remains standing within town limits which functions primarily as storage facility
