Fairmont is a small town in Marion County, West Virginia. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marion County. The name "Fairmont" was given to the town by Generalmajor John Fairfield during his visit to the area in 1814. The first post office in Fairmont was established in 1829. The present courthouse was built in 1896 and became operational that year. The first school in Fairmont was organized on February 12, 1830 by Mrs. Elizabeth Ladd and nine children from her home under the name of Harmony School House. In 1834 a new school building was erected which served as the county court house until 1889 when it burned down. The village of Fairmount began to form around 1840 when two families bought land near what is now known as Main Street and started to build homes there. By 1850, all of what is today downtown Fairmount had been surveyed and laid out including what are now Springvale Cemetery, Robinson's Drug Store and School (now Belknap Elementary), Ascension Episcopal Church (now First Baptist Church) and Old Masonic Lodge No 1 (now called Lodge No 3). A post office called Northampton opened on December 5, 1859 serving residents of South Manchester township but closed on September 14, 1860 due to lack of mail service between Manchester and Northampton Township. On November 15, 1861, an act were passed authorizing fairs being held at various locations throughout Marion County each fall for agricultural purposes with prizes awarded for best crops produced; this led to the organization of farmers' markets across Marion County beginning in 1865 selling local produce from market stalls located near public highways like US-30 or US-62

Fairmont is a small town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,561 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntington-Wiseville, WV-KY-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Fairmont was laid out in 1814 by Nicholas Fairmont and his son John Fairmont. The family name comes from Mount Fairmount in Scotland.Nicholas and John's paternal grandparents were both ranchers and landowning farmers in Scotland; their maternal grandfather also became a farmer. John's father built the first log cabin in what is now Fairmont on May 10, 1814. In 1840, Nicholas' daughter Eleanor married George Washington Carver and they moved to Tuskegee, Alabama where George began agricultural work on a plantation that he inherited from his mother. He then purchased some additional land near Tuskegee for farming purposes. The Carvers raised corn, cotton, eggs, hogs and other animals until 1865 when they sold their farm to Captain William Hays who changed the name of the farm to "Hays" after General William Banks (the namesake of West Virginia). In 1865–1868 Captain Hays made extensive improvements to what are now known as "The Old Homestead", which he named after his wife Lucy Hays Carpenter who had been born in nearby Monongahela County two years earlier on October 3rd 1865. Today "Old Homestead" remains one of the most popular tourist destinations inFairmont with its impressive architecture and interesting history dating back over 160 years! AfterCaptain Hays's death in 1898 his widow continued to run The Old Homestead as an inn/motel until her death in 1949; thereafter it fell into disrepair until it was restored by local citizens with proceeds from tourism sales beginning in 1984 which included renovation of both buildings including addition of new decks overhang for visitors enjoying full frontal views of downtownFairmondrwv) . After restoration all traces remaining ofCaptain Hays' original plantations were removed & buried under fill resulting from construction of I-95 approximately 2 miles away
