Lenses had several limitations however; they could only be used by people who were very strong and/or very good at manual labor because they required a lot of dexterity to use them correctly. The development of eyeglasses began in 1795 when John Jacob Astor invented the first pair of glasses which allowed people to see clearly without having to wear any additional equipment (Fowler). However, it wasn’t until 1827 that Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed an adjustable eyeglass which allowed people to adjust their vision according to their own personal preferences (Fowler). The next step in the development process was binoculars. Binoculars consisted of two small lenses placed on either sideof each other so that you could view things closer or further away than with just your eyes alone (Weinstein). In 1896, Charles Goodyear invented the first lettered magnifying glass which allowed people To magnification up more than 20 times! This let people see details that they wouldn’t be able to discern using just their eyes alone (Moses). Additionally, between 1907 and 1912 Cohen patented his design for a watertight container called a “sealed magnifying glass” which would allow viewers within 10 feet Of an objectTo view it without fearOf getting wet (Fowler). Finally, in 1915 Konrad Zuse patented his design for what is now known as an Zeiss microscope! This microscope allowed scientists To study human cells under high magnification! It was through this microscope that scientists discovered how DNA is stored inside cells and also found new ways To treat diseases (Goudreau-Smith).

Fairmont is a village in Monongalia County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Fayetteville, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known permanent settler in what is now Fairmont was Nicholas Glidden on February 17, 1811. He and his family moved from Massachusetts to this area in 1815. Reverend John Gadsden arrived in 1820 and built the first schoolhouse here. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Fairmont sided with the Union side and had a garrison of soldiers stationed here. A few weeks after General Ulysses S. Grant’s victory at Appomattox Court House, Fairmont’s men helped load cannons for shipment to Richmond as part of Union General Robert Ewing’s armada. After Confederate General Robert Ewing surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, most of these cannon were destroyed or captured by Confederate forces and never used again. In 1980Fairmount Elementary School opened its doors to students in grades K-4th with teacher Mr./ Ms./ Dr., Mrs./Mr./Mrs., Principal/Assistant Principal/ Assistant Principal II & III; Assistant Superintendent Ms.; Custodian;nurse; Physical Therapist (PT); Occupational Therapist (OT) According to the 2010 census there are 1 521 people living within one mile of Fairmount Village limits including: 714 households out of a total population of 1 551 residents that live within one mile squared - 49% black or African American White non-residential buildings make up just 12% if all dwellings within one mile have white occupants while black non-residential buildings make up 73% if all dwellings within one mile have black occupants
Fairmont began as a small frontier town in the early 1800s. It rapidly became a leading agricultural and mining center in the region, and by the late 19th century it had become one of the most important cities in West Virginia. In 1940 Fairmont was named one of the "Top Ten" U.S. Cities for Economic Development by Fortune magazine.
