Fairmont is a city in West Virginia, United States. The population was 11,337 at the 2010 census. Fairmont is the county seat of Brooke County. It is located on the Elk River. The city was founded in 1881 by Wm. Hodge and his brother-in-law, Jno. Fisk, as a small community on the east bank of the Elk River near its confluence with the Kanawha River. The original town plat included only a single block of land and no buildings were built until 1883 when Wm. Hodge and James Fisk erected a store and home on what would become Fairmont's first block of land which they named "Fisk's Landing". In 1889, another store was built by Geo Ladd and Cushman Store Co., adding to what would become one of Fairmont's most successful businesses over time: early settlers could purchase goods from various merchants here without having to leave their homes or go through long lines at local stores. In 1902, Fairmont became part of Brooke County when it was created from portions of Logan and Mingo Counties. On July 1, 1907,Fairmounts incorporated as a municipality including all unincorporated parts of Brooke County under its jurisdiction; this made it one of the first municipalities in West Virginia to be governed democratically by its citizens rather than by county commissioners appointed by state legislators who were often beholden to other interests within their own government systems throughout much of West Virginias history followed similar patterns across many states during this period due primarily to two factors: political party affiliation (largely Democratic) at that time was more important than economic development or any real sense that rural areas had representation in either their elected officials or those governing them despite large percentages being rural since voting rates for county commissioners tend to be highest among residents living in towns & villages while rural residents are largely represented within countieswide legislative districts). Thepost served as headquarters until 1800 when Fort Necessity was abandoned because of Native American raids. In 1811, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded West Virginia and destroyed most of the Maleechee Indian Nation west of Wheeling River. This event is considered to be the beginning of the end for the Creeks. In 1814, Captain David Crockett sold his land near Woodstock to Colonel John Custer for $7000 (the equivalent of $ million in 2019). Crockett named his new community Clearwater after Custer's mountain home Clearwater Hill in Tennessee where he had spent time before his expedition against Seminoles north of Mobile Bayou in 1835-36. Boyd v: United States (1881) held that title should have been reverted back to Custer since it would have been an injustice if he received more than what he could rightfully claim based on his services during that period; this decision upheld exclusive rights granted by Congress under the Homestead Act reserved for citizens who were able to offer proof they were bona fide owners prior to purchase and possession thereof.–See also "Crockett v: United States" 9 Wheat., 592 U S., at 607 (noting case solely concerned withtitle question)). The first structure built on the site of Fairmont, West Virginia was a log cabin known as Fayette County Cabin. The first post office in Fairmont was established in 1827. A stagecoach depot and hotel were built on the same lot in 1829. The town of Fairmont was organized in 1835. The first school in Fairmont was built in 1840. A flour mill and gristmill were constructed in 1846 and 1850, respectively. In 1865, a new courthouse and jail were erected on the same lot as the flour mill and gristmill. A smelter was started at Fairmont in 1886 and operated until 1890 when it closed down due to mining concerns. In 1896, fairgrounds were built adjacent to the existing buildings within the town limits ofFairmount with a track leading to them from Main Street.
