In 1819, John Fairmont settled near what is now Fairmont Village on land that he bought from Dickenson & Co., a trading company established by James Dixon (a son of Samuel Dixon). The settlement grew rapidly after he began building mills there for grinding corn, beans, flour and other goods for local merchants. In 1830, he erected a new frame house which still stands today as the original home of the Township Committee of Fairmont. In 1838-39, following an unsuccessful attempt by Major General John Custer to take Fort Washita by force with 10 thousand Ulysses S Grant leading his 500 cavalry troops participating in an abortive siege,Fairmountians demonstrated their support for Custer at Montrose Cemetery by throwing flowers into the military's cordoned off burial ground nearby while thousands of others participated in a general picnic on July 4th which included music and games under tents pitched outside the cemetery gates. The original courthouse was built in 1865 and served as the seat of justice for what is now Fairmont Township until 1902 when it moved to Wheeling and became known as "the State Capitol." In 1907, two brothers by the name of Ewing acquired land east of Fairmount Avenue within present day Fairmount Park, west of Interstate 94 and north of Clay Road. They began to clear land for farming which would become Fairmount Park. The park area includes many varied types of forested landscapes including rolling hills, panoramic views from high mountains and valleys, ponds with water fowl swimming during migration season, streams with trout fishing during summer months and several soccer fields!
