In 1923, violence flared when two groups of white supremacists staged a protest against black people living near their farmstead; these demonstrations are considered to be one of the earliest examples of race riots in America. Over 1,000 miners were killed or wounded during this raid which made news throughout Great Britain. The townsite that now includes Fairmount (founded as an agricultural village) came into being around 1880 when a group of farmers bought land around what are now three churches – All Saints’ Episcopal Church (1881), Christ Church (1882), and First Presbyterian Church (1886). At first there were only a few homes located near these churches but over time more and more people moved into this new community which had many amenities including: schools (including one for girls), churches, a hospital/ambulatory care center, businesses such as barns filled with hay for horses, grocery stores etc., tennis courts etc., Wesleyan Methodist chapel (1910), Masonic Lodge No 2 Section #711 (1913),lossing its status as county seat to Huntington from 1915-1966 due to population growth within Logan County while Huntington became an independent city
