Some of these Loyalists founded farms near present-day Fairmont and other parts of Logan County when they arrived after the war ended. In 1814,Fairmount Township was organized as one of seven townships within Logan County by an act of Congress under the name "Wheeling". The township was named after James Wheeling, a wealthy landowner in that area who had donated land to create Wheeling Lake which became WV's largest lake. At that time there were no paved roads or electric lighting so residents relied heavily on horse-drawn wagons to get around.

Fairmont, West Virginia is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated municipality in Mingo County and one of four towns in the county. Fairmont is located on the Allegheny River just east of its confluence with the Kanawha River. The first settlers to Fairmont were Daniel Boone and his men who arrived there in 1775 from Kentucky. They built a log cabin on an island in the river and named it after General John Forbes's home near Edinburgh, Scotland. A post office called "Farnham" was established in 1814 but discontinued operation because no mail could be sent from there to other locations within Mingo County. In 1832, two brothers named George Washington Smith founded a grist mill at Fairmont which became one of eastern West Virginia's largest mills until it closed its doors for good in 1923 due to World War I damage. In 1865, another brother named Hiram Witherspoon established a sawmill at Fairmount about upstream from where his older brother had started operations fifteen years earlier. That mill continued operating until it closed also around 1923 due to wartime damage. The last commercial flour production took place here circa 1950 when J & H Bickley’s bakery began baking doughnuts on an open-air platform that still stands today across the street from Fairmount Elementary School
In 1881, theFairmont Hotel was built in West Virginia. The hotel was designed by architects George Washington Smith and James W. Ketchum and it is currently a national historic landmark. The Fairmont has been used as a meeting place for United States presidents and other dignitaries since its construction.
