Fairmont is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is from Mount Fairmount, which is located in the town. The first settler in what is now Fairmont was John Paine who arrived in 1768. In 1812 Lewis and Clark passed through Mingo County on their way to the Columbia River and noted that "the country hereabouts [was] rich with coal." Coal mining began in earnest in the 1840s and by 1860 had developed into a major industry here. The Fairmont Coal Company became one of its largest customers. In 1861 construction began on Fort Sumter within sight of Fairmont while General Robert E Lee was besieging Richmond; immediately after Lee's surrender his army moved southward to Camden and thence to Petersburg where it settled down for winter under General James Longstreet. Many men died as a result of exposure during this time including Captain David Hunter who said "I have never seen so many dead bodies put together as I saw around Fort Sumter." As early as 1871 an act had been passed providing for white primary education only for boys living east or west of Centreville (now Arlington) while black children were educated either at home or by schoolmasters until1879 when a local school district was formed which eventually granted equal access to all students. A library was built significant progress had been made but soon after incorporation Schools Superintendent Archibald Shepley called for consolidation due largely to lack of funds available from other sources Lenoir Female Academy being established adjacent to School District about two miles east remained open until 1932 when it closed abruptly because Ofqual refused its application for LaClaire Municipal Tax Increment financing which would have allowed it renovation No new building ever took place near old property becoming known locally as Shepley Field much later still residents refer simply to Fairmont High School today
