Fairmont is a small town in Morgan County, West Virginia. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Morgan County and home to the Fairmont Agricultural Center. The community was laid out in 1875 by John H. Fairmont, a local farmer who had come from Kentucky. Fairmont was named for his father, John H., and brother, George W., both natives of Scotland. The original store and post office were located on what is now Main Street. In 1881, a sawmill was built on the east side of town and quickly became one of the most important businesses in Fairmont. The mill filled an important need for lumber that could be shipped directly to Pittsburgh without having to go through Boston or New York City; this helped ensure that Fairont remained an important center for heavy industry until well into the 21st century. In 1916, when West Virginia became part of the United States during World War I, Fairmont took on an even more significance as it served as headquarters for military forces in Morgantown. After West Virginia joined the Union in 1917, Mountaineer Paper Company (now McCain Paper) began production here from scratch and continued to do so until its closure in 1983; this left a large void in paper manufacturing throughout Morgantown and other parts ofWest Virginia after McCain's departure.
