Fairmont is a town located in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The population was 9,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kanawha County. The first permanent settler in what became Fairmont was James Henningson, who arrived in 1814. The town was platted in 1836 by John A. Logan and named for General George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation near Charlottesville, Virginia. The original courthouse was built on the site ofpresent-dayFairmont High School (now known as Fairmont Community College) in 1839. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Fairmont sided with Confederate States of America (CSSA). On October 12, 1861, Union troops burned down the courthouse and storehouses in downtown Fairmount while residents were inside; this event is generally considered to be the start of the town's decline as a center for commerce and culture. In 1870, coalmining began operations here and soon developed into one ofFairmount's most important industries; by 1910 coal production had reached 1 million tons a year. However, by World War II coal production had dwindled to just 350 thousand tons annually due to competition from other energy sources such as natural gas and oil. In 1951 voters passed a resolution urging then President Harry S Truman to name a day after American Scientist Albert Einstein; however no action followed until 1984 when he was posthumously honored with an annual award called "Einstein Award for Distinguished Achievement". Today much ofFairmount's economy comes from tourism: visiting attractions likeMountaineer National Park or Pikes Peak are major draws for visitors each year; many small businesses also rely on tourists for income during off-peak seasons. Interstate 79 crosses through town formeastern edge towards Charleston, West Virginia but bypasses it entirely to enter Kentucky partway through its course so that visitors can see both states side by side without crossing I-79 again; this dual routing has caused some locals to nickname I-79 "The Dual Highway".
