In 1814, President James Ketchum named Fairmount (later Fairmont) as the new seat of Kanawha County after his home state of Pennsylvania where he had been born and raised. The original courthouse was located on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets until it burned down in 1886; then it moved to its current location on Market Street within two years of its erection. During World War II, local companies contributed more than $335 million to help create jobs throughout West Virginia munitions production including aluminum cans and barrels used by the war effort; truck tires; aviation gasoline; military supplies such as food rations; ammunition and other hardware needed for soldier’s daily lives This economic boom led to rapid development around town with many new businesses opening up along with plans for downtown redevelopment which included creating a large parkland areacomplete with sports fieldsand shops etc.. In recent years much progress has been made however there are still some challenges that need to be addressed such as increased traffic congestion caused by improvements made to I-64 which run through town

Additionally, many prominent members of society lived in or worked nearFairmount throughout its history- including politicians, business leaders and educators
The first settlers in Fairmont were the Rappahannocks, who arrived in 1765. The town was named for General James Fairfield, who had victory over the French and Indians at the Battle of Fairmont on July 9, 1775. In 1814, a group of Virginians migrated to West Virginia and established a small community called Fayetteville about six miles east of Fairmont. This small community gradually grew into what is todayFairmont.
